ENCOUNTERS WITH ART: “The Khazagir of the Armenian Dance” | Dedicated to the 130th Anniversary of Srbuhi Lisitsyan

June 29, 2023
On June 29, 2023, a lecture dedicated to the 130th anniversary of Srbuhi Lisitsyan will take place at the Special Events Auditorium of the Cafesjian Center for the Arts (CCA) within the scope of “Encounters with Art” program. The lecture will be delivered by Gagik Ginosyan, national dance professional, Founder and Creative Director of “Karin” Traditional Song and Dance Ensemble.

During the lecture titled “THE KHAZAGIR OF THE ARMENIAN DANCE” (khazagir is an Armenian notation system) Mr. Ginosyan will talk about Srbuhi Lisitsyan, the “Komitas of the Armenian dance,” ethnographer, art historian, inventor of the notation system of dance movements, researcher and gatherer of folklore and dance art, originator of the Armenian school of dance science, and founder of ethnodance science.
“Komitas sought and found the key to the Armenian song and melody, hidden beneath the dust of centuries, to revive and eternalize the Armenian music, while Srbuhi Lisitsyan invented the recording of the dances, called kinetography (kaqavagir) or dance khazagir, transmitting the traditional Armenian dance to the centuries to come,” stated Gagik Ginosyan.

“Karin” Traditional Song and Dance Ensemble will also perform dances restored and preserved thanks to Srbuhi Lisitsyan’s recordings.

The event starts at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
