The Cafesjian Center for the Arts Takes Part in French Literature Day

October 01, 2010 The Cafesjian Center for the Arts takes part in French Literature Days in Armenia by hosting an exhibition dedicated to famous French writer and film director Alain Robbe-Grillet.

The exhibition,  presented  at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts on October 2-8, includes  selections  from the archives of the famous writer, currently held by the French Institute Mémoires de l’Edition Contemporaine (IMEC).

“This special exhibition, celebrating French literature, reflects the Cafesjian Center for the Arts continuing participation in international cultural exchange. We are pleased to be part of French Literature Days and in so doing strengthen the bridge between Armenia and France,” said Vahagn Marabyan, Acting Executive Director of the Cafesjian Center for the Arts.

French Literature Days in Yerevan, dedicated to Alain Robbe-Grillet and the New Novel literary movement, are organized as a joint effort of the Service for Cultural Activities and Cooperation, the Society of Friends of the French Embassy Library, the Cafesjian Center for the Arts and IMEC, with the assistance of the writer’s widow, Catherine Robbe-Grillet.  The series of events  includes  film screenings, literary lectures and discussions at various cultural venues and universities in  Yerevan. 

Alain Robbe-Grillet, a famous French writer and filmmaker, is considered  one of the primary literary figures associated with the Nouveau Roman (New Novel) literary movement  – a type of 1950s French novel that diverged from classical literary genres. Robbe-Grillet’s most acclaimed novels inlcude The Voyeur and The Jealosy. Robbe-Grillet also wrote screenplays, notably for Alain Resnais' 1961 film Last Year at Marienbad, a critical success considered  one of the finest French films of the 1960s. It was followed by a number of films written and directed by Robbe-Grillet, himself.
