The Cafesjian Center for the Arts Announces the Opening of the Exhibition Libenský/Brychtová: Light through Space.April 25, 2014 Glass allows us to build up a harmony between shapes and penetrating light, and to thus define the essence of light - space and to touch the secret of this space.Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová, 1995 Libenský/Brychtová: Light through Space opens in Gallery One at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts on April 26, 2014, at 19:00, presenting a selection of sculptures by the internationally recognized Czech artists Stanislav Libenský (1921-2002) and Jaroslava Brychtová (b. 1924). Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová are among the leading figures of modern studio glass. Exploring and reassessing the expressive and physical nature of glass, they created a body of work defined with new forms of color and transparency, volume and space, light and spirituality. Despite the political and creative constraints in their native country during the second half of the last century, their art was welcomed and applauded by the international arts community. The artistic legacy of Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová and their role as a creative force in modern sculpture will endure for generations to come. “Libenský/Brychtová: Light through Space” includes seventeen sculptures, representing the stylistic and thematic uniqueness of the artists’ oeuvre. Six reverse-relief glass panels, depicting animals are from an early series by the artists. Featured in the exhibition is a group of three sculptures, Space I, II, and III, which reveals the artists’ search for new spatial relationships, allowing insight into the discovery of inner spaces articulated visually by the penetration of light. “Libenský/Brychtová: Light through Space” is the third presentation of the artists’ work in Armenia, selected from the Gerard L. Cafesjian Collection which is recognized as possessing the greatest number of large Libenský/Brychtová sculptures in the world. The exhibition organized in celebration of Jaroslava Brychtová’s 90th birthday anniversary, is an appropriate tribute to the couple, whose long, creative collaboration elevated glass as a fine art medium to a new and dramatic aesthetic for modern sculpture”, said Vahagn Marabyan, the Acting Executive Director of the Cafesjian Center for the Arts. The exhibition was organized in collaboration with the artist, Jaroslava Brychtová, and the Libenský/Brychtová Studio in the Czech Republic. Admission to the preview opening on April 26 is by invitations only. The exhibition opens to the public on April 27 at 10:00. Other materials from this section
