The Cafesjian Center for the Arts Presents New Sculpture from the Gerard L. Cafesjian CollectionApril 06, 2012 A new sculpture is presented on the Sasuntsi Davit Terrace of the Cafesjian Center for the Arts (CCA) - Lion 2, (2008), by Korean artist Ji Yong-Ho.This work expands the impressive selection of monumental sculptures installed in the Cafesjian Sculpture Garden and the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, already listing such major names in contemporary art as Fernando Botero, Jaume Plensa, Barry Flanagan, Lynn Chadwick and David Breuer-Weil. Korean artist Ji Yong-Ho combines various types of tires to create unusual realistic sculptures of animals. In Lion 2 he used stainless steel structures, in order to express the dynamic features of four-legged animal. The limbs of the Lion 2 are elaborated with shredded motorcycle tires and the fur is represented with turned out tires. Tires are a medium that translate what the artist means to express most sufficiently. The black tires are reminiscent of industrialization, which includes industrial material, industrial wastes, and even environmental pollution. He focuses on mutated animals and especially on artificial mutation. His works seem terrorizing and strong but the truth is that they are fragile and unstable. Yong Ho Ji's intention is to send a message of warning on environmental destruction and a human-caused threat to itself. The Cafesjian Center for the Arts (CCA) is dedicated to bringing the best of contemporary art to Armenia and presenting the best of Armenian culture to the world. Inspired by the vision of its founder, Mr. Gerard L. Cafesjian, the Center offers a wide variety of exhibitions, derived from Mr. Cafesjian’s own extensive collection of contemporary art. Having celebrated its grand opening in November 2009, CCA continues to exhibit unique works of modern art and offers a diverse program of visiting lecturers, films, concerts, and numerous educational initiatives for children and adults.
