Tigran Tsitoghdzyan: Mirrors Exhibition Opens at CCA

June 19, 2015
Tigran Tsitoghdzyan: Mirrors exhibition opened at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts on June 18. It marks the first solo exhibition of the New York-based artist in Armenia after his departure from the country in the late 90s.

Tigran Tsitoghdzyan was born in Yerevan, in 1976. In 1986, by the age of ten, over one hundred of Tigran’s paintings were exhibited in a solo exhibition in Armenia, which thereafter traveled to the US, Russia, Japan and Spain. Once recognized as a child-prodigy, the young artist pursued a prolific career starting in his native Armenia, continuing in Europe and finally settling in New York. Being strongly tied to his Armenian roots and culture, his art develops in the perspective of contemporary art tendencies, with a growing international recognition.

The exhibition, Tigran Tsitoghdzyan: Mirrors brings together six paintings from the artist’s recent oeuvre, presenting four large-scale paintings from the Mirrors series, as well as the works The Crowd II and Armenian Mirror II, which reflect Tigran’s vision of his homeland, depicting a collective portraiture of Armenia in its transitional present and historical past.

“The year 2015 reasserted the vision of the Cafesjian Center for the Arts to present Armenian art and culture in a perspective of its continuation, prosperity and contemporaneity. Tigran Tsitoghdzyan is undeniably among those, whose art embodies this vision.” - said the Acting Executive Director of CCA Vahagn Marabyan.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog, featuring a newly written critical introduction by art critic Donald Kuspit, Professor Emeritus of Art History and Philosophy at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

The exhibition dates are June 18 to September 20, 2015. Admission will be free during June 19-21.
