American artist Jack Youngerman (1926–2020) was a prominent figure in postwar abstraction, known for his bold organic forms that bridge painting and sculpture. Influenced by his years in Paris and later involvement in the New York art scene, he developed a distinctive visual language rooted in geometry, movement, and nature.

Spread Eagle (1971) is a polished stainless steel sculpture that reflects Youngerman’s interest in optical play and organic symmetry. Its wing-like form and mirrored surface invite the viewer into a dynamic interaction with space, light, and reflection. Installed in the Cafesjian Sculpture Garden, the work has become one of the iconic outdoor pieces in the collection.
