Ji Yong-Ho
Korean artist Ji Yong-Ho combines various types of recycled tires to create large-scale, evocative sculptures of animals.
Using fragments of recycled tires, Korean artist Ji Yong-Ho (b. 1978) creates striking sculptures of both real and mythical creatures.
In Lion 2 (2008), he used an internal stainless steel armature to define the dynamic form of the wild animal, while its limbs and fur were constructed with shredded motorcycle tires.
The black tires serve as an index of industrial labor, and reflect the politics of production, waste, and environmental pollution. The artist’s mutant creatures warn us of the dangers of environmental destruction.
